South African search engine shootout…
…and the loser is… YOU! Tyler over at Kiefpiet planted this seed this morning when he could not find Kiefpiet on Ananzi and Jonga.
Why Ananzi And Jonga Suck
This got me thinking… stii.za.net feature on Google when you search mootools. (mootools is a javascript library. See here) Not on the first couple of pages anymore (I think), but it does feature none the less. So I went and searched for “mootools” on the following South African engines:
The results, I’m afraid to say, were in some cases a JOKE. Its almost as funny as bLaugh’s comics… So without further ado, lets look at the results:
Up first is everybody’s favorite:

Almost got excited here, but alas: “WTF!!!”
The result had a 48% relevance and I don’t see the word mootools even featured.
Next up: AARDVARK! I really had tremendously high hopes here, since their search is powered by Google, but I seemed to forget that the other power behind Aardvark is Telkom. Enough said.
Their search was fast at least… Maybe it was too fast and overlooked some results.
Up next was Funnel. So when I saw their home page I though “Hey, they look like Google! Here is hope!” HAH! Was I wrong OR WHAT?!

It at least tried to sound clever… It knew a big word! Unlike or next contestant:
Jonga!! EISH!!
Nope. Not tools… Although there is “
Displaying results 1 to 10 of 2,561,494 found in 0.245s” for tools! Lightning fast as welll… Their footer at least confirmed my suspicions that Jonga = Clueless. “Searching at least 26,443,000
web pages and growing.” At least? Don’t know how much web pages you are searching for sure?
Next up: 24.com - blip-bleep… They found the most results. Although I must add in 0.765 seconds! Maybe the lesson to be learned here is it takes time to find results!
All I can say is that I’m a bit shocked. I knew the situation was bad, but this is simple ridiculous! No wonder most people in South Africa do not know what a blog is. These guys have the audience and are supposed to set the internet standards in South Africa.
Also, this post by Dave comparing Ananzi’s top 10 search terms with Google’s makes a lot more sense now, since searching for ANYTHING else than the keywords mentioned in that post will result in nothing!
I would love to hear from the guys mentioned above. Explaining themselves and what they intend to improve the situation. I guess thats wishful thinking… sort of like thinking that I will find some results on them…

LOL … that doesn’t surprize me. I’m a google fan
I occasionally use the “only pages from South Africa” option on google, but that’s the closest I get to South African sites.
