Geekdinner: 23 June 2007
We had to postpone our geekery, but with good reason! Apart from only having some great wine to kick-start (limited amount of wine consumption for free!) the conversations on the night, we now have some great minds sharing great food for thought to get you thinking! Graham Knox, the mastermind behind Stormhoek will be telling us his more than interesting tale! Come and listen to how a small wine farm outside Wellington is turning the wine industry on its head!
I recently found this great post on Shaun Dewberry’s blog:
“…They expect a 2.8 percent growth in exports this year, assuming our currency depreciates by 10 percent…”
“…Take Stormhoek, our favourite hacker wine, who are blowing away these figures with a 500% increase in sales in less than two years...”
Interesting…
I will try and give some practical examples and uses of microformats that will (hopefully) make sense to everyone. That and how it will impact on web designers and bloggers and web site owners. Why they should not ignore the semantic web. How easy it is to implement and some more.
We are also doing our best to get the latest TED fellow to come and enlighten us about what is happening out in the world as far as great new technology goes. For those of you that do not know what TED is (it is NOT Father Ted Crilly!
) here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:
“…TED (Technology Entertainment Design) is an annual conference held in Monterey, California and recently, semi-annually in other cities around the world. TED describes itself as a “group of remarkable people that gather to exchange ideas of incalculable value”. Its lectures cover a broad set of topics including science, arts, politics, global issues, architecture, music and more. The speakers themselves are from a wide variety of communities and disciplines. The TED Conference also has acompanion conference, TED Global, held in varying locations…”
This year’s TED conference was held in Tanzania and Rafiq Phillips (Your Web AddiCT) was one of the phenominal people attending and representing SA!
Another great is the indomitable Hunter of Genius and SA Rocks! contributor. I can guarantee you that this would be one of the most inspiring talks you will hear. It will make you realise the Genius inside you and show you a fairly rare positive side to South Africa.
The night will start fairly early and will go down at the beautiful Dutton’s Cove just outside George in Herolds Bay. Attending it is free, you only pay for what you consume. So if you want more info or would like to join us, you can either RSVP by putting your name on the wiki or you can simply drop me a e.mail by clicking right here, right now and I’ll do it for you! Or you can get in touch with any one of Charl, Bev or Jayx. Great food, great people and a great venue. What more can I say?
