Kupa = Sh*t

AAARGHH! Done it again!

When the kupa project was announced on http://microformatique.com it turns out that we’ve picked our name, well, shitty! As it turns out, kupa in Polish means shit. We apologise to all the Polish people and fully hope that kupa won’t turn out to be a SHIT project! We’ll do our best!

As John pointed out: “the joys of a gobal world“. Indeed…

ROFL, sorry boys and girls, but we meant it in the isiXhosa sense of the word which means “sharing” and not the Polish version that means “shit”!

Ahhhhh, I do LOVE this world we live in… So funny!

*VERY IMPORTANT* If you are going to pick a name for a project, read this VERY interesting and excellent post On Naming an Open Source Project. Clearly I didn’t read it before kupa.

  A kupa is a guy who makes barrels (in English you spell it a bit differently) and as far as he is concerned, his competitors make shit barrels. He tells all of his customers this. But they are a bit shy about spreading this around as a reputation for making kupa wine is hard to live down.

  Actually, kupa is a rather soft and less offensice word for “shit”, so in English it would be “poo”. It doesn’t change the whole situation, though

  BTW: do you remember the Mario Bros cartoon? The “evil” character was called Koopa, which sounds exactly like Polish word “kupa”. Try to imagine the first reaction of Polish children to such name
