Mail & Gaurdian makes you a part of their redevelopment process

The Mail & Gaurdian, one of South Africa’s leading newspapers, ‘leaked’ some inside info about their main news site’s redevelopment. Going from ASP to PHP and going with a custom developed system rather than an Open Source solution.

mail and guardian

I love it! I think it is a stunning move on behalf of Matthew and Vincent to keep readers/bloggers up to speed with the redevelopment process of the site. We’re so used to stealth tactics and keeping new development under covers to release with a bang that we tend to forget that doing the whole process in public could be just as effective as proven here. It almost create a sense of belonging. It creates a lot of interest. It is all-in-all pretty exciting.

I’d love to know more and I have a suspicion that if you’re going to ask, the guys will tell! Magic! So Vince, tell us. Are you going to use some sort of MVC framework or is development happening from the ground up?

Telkom’s scapegoat = Eskom

Today I phoned Telkom to upgrade my ADSL line to a 4Meg line. It took me all of 15 minutes just to verify that I’m me due to the systems that slower than a sloth. So off this call centre oke goes:

“You know, this bloody country… The power must be off somewhere and some servers must be down. Eish, these Eskom guys are pathetic. You know, the CEO gets something like a million Rand a month. If they cut his salary by R600 000, then he’ll still have a half decent salary (realy?! you don’t say!). You know how many people they can employ with R600 000??? 15 000 @ R4000 per month. Those guys, they really don’t know what they’re doing. Yesterday, a client had to hold for 20 minutes just so I could complete his order. Yadayadayada…”

At that point I has literally laughing out loud as I thought it was simply too good that Telkom blames Eskom of bad service! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Priceless.

To top it all off, after I held on for almost 20 minutes to do my order, this guy tells me:

“Sorry sir, but I’m not authorised to complete this order. Please hold while I transfer you to one of my supervisors”

I rest my case. There is abso-bloody-lutely NO, NONE, NADA coincident that both these companies’ names ends in “KOM”…

SA blog awards - Tips, Tricks & Unspoken rules

Jan 29

SA Blog AwardsOur annual popularity contest is upon us! This year it seems the guys organizing is going to be much more strict with an entirely new set of rules. The rules are clear and easy to understand (even for a layman). Here is a couple of Tips, Tricks & “Unspoken” Rules to keep in mind:

Ask to get nominated. - As proven by Shaun Okes, if thou ask thou shalt receive… If your blog’s got half decent traffic, odds are fairly well stacked in your favor that it might just make it to the voting round! The My Digital Life guys looks like they’re all geared to have their main blog in the “Weblog of the year” category and at least 3 user blogs in every category. Competition is sure going to be excruciatingly tough in ‘08.

Once in the voting process ask for votes. - Again, as above. If you really want it as bad as you know you want it, get yourself 1000 email accounts and vote for yourself 1000 times. Frankly, if you want it that bad, you probably deserve it. :-P

I’m trying very hard not to give Sessa a butt-cramp, but hell, conversations… Be visible. Now. See, once the voting list is out there, everyone starts to read 8 times as many blogs as before. No really. People take the time not to vote blindly. They actually read every blog before casting their votes. Just to be safe though, make sure people are “aware” of your “presence”. In other words, become a comment troll. See, if people sort of see and remember your blog and if you are in a category amongst fairly unknown blogs to the voter, people will vote for you simply because they’ve “seen” you somewhere so you’ve GOT to be good. :-P

Rule: Please, FOR PETE’S SAKE, do NOT bitch about the logo again. It is such a bloody pain in the butt for everyone and even though you might think you can do better, keep it for yourself. Wait… maybe the organizers can organize a special category this year! They could have a “I can design better than everyone else and get my croniez to vote my design to stardom only to be vetoed eventually anyway because clearly I cheated as my design is crap and got the most votes” category.

Now I’m wondering, is Ideate going to be excluded this year as Mr Cherry himself is a contributor over there? If so, it would be a damn crying shame! By the looks of it Dave already excused himself as he was involved in some way, which is damn unfair as he is doing a damn fine job over on his blog. I’d prefer he does it more often, but hey, I’m the last one to say that. Actually, Sessa is the last one to say that. I might be second last. Here’s a thought for Fred, Shane and the boys. Just until after this thing, hide all Jon’s posts.

As far as the category for “Most Controversial Blog” goes, are you kidding me?! The organizers might as well wrap that one up NOW and split it three ways between Guy, Bolton and Richard. Done deal. No contest. Then again, splitting it 3 ways is not exactly the point of the entire exercise, right? Maybe we’ll have a contest over after all…

PS: Don’t forget to nominate Stormhoek this year! Please! We cannot afford to bite the hand that pours… AGAIN!

Lion hunters. Upsetting - not for sensitive viewers

Nov 01

Normally I would have quite light-hearted and humorous topics on this blog, but this upsets me, so I cannot just let it slide. I hate this shit. I HATE IT!!! This is exactly the reason why white afrikaans speaking people and Americans are so hated. The total lack of respect for living things. Such a beautiful creature being shot to death in a hail of bullets.

The lion did almost get the satisfaction to take one fucker down. What a pity he did not. I’m sorry to say that, but having so little respect for such a magnificent creature deserves no respect in return. Morally I feel bad for wishing the lion didn’t do more damage, but I’m sorry, I do. I’m so upset and emotional at the moment! The saddest thing of it all is that this is a promotional video to promote more lion killing in Africa. “Live the danger of lion hunting…” WTF!!! Why in Gods name is there no law against this barbaric practices? There should be life imprisonment for shit like this. That fuckers should all end up with cosy bedmates in Pollsmoor prison. Let the hunters be hunted.

Maybe I’m simply over reacting. I apologize if you feel that way. I just hate things like this. Best of all, they left their contact details at the end. Do with it what you think good…

New Zealand and Australia out! Who would have predicted THAT!

Oct 06

This must be the most interesting Rugby World Cup ever! In my previous post I said: “and now its time to see New Zealand get knocked out the World Cup by France!” I said it, but never thought it would actually happen!

Its a tournament of surprises. It started with an upset where Argentina won France. Today the number 1 and number 2 favorites get knocked out of the World Cup. Unbelievable stuff!

I did make a prediction and said that it was going to be a SA vs. Australia final. I expected New Zealand would fumble, but not so early in the tournament. The curse lives on for them. Australia was a bit of a shock though.

South Africa better not think they’ve got an easy ride to the finals. We might have a flawless record against Fiji, but as was evident today, the team that wants it the most is going to take it.

Next week’s semi final between France and England are going to be a thriller! That is without a doubt. Well done to both of them. They both played exceptionally well and came through in a big way. Loved it when Captain Ibanez said: “Every one was talking about the Tri-nations semi final…” HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You can’t be too sure now, can you?!

Broadband over powerlines

Oct 04

I stumbled upon this new company in SA which is to supply PLC (Power Line Communication) called GTS. Oh, how exciting! Now we can give Telkom the finger, right? WRONG!!! One thing we must not forget is that Telkom controls whatever bandwidth goes out of this country. So Telkom will charge what Telkom charges. Whoever or whatever solution we choose, the money is going to end up in Telkom coffers one way or another.

Lets have a look at the costs for PLC. This is a price matrix on GTS’s website:

GTS price matrix

R500 for 5GB, no line rental or binding contracts. Not too bad, but neither is it earth shattering good. Speed is a bit shoddy considering that Telkom now offer 4 Mbps lines. My main concern is, is it not a case of “rather the devil you know than the one you don’t”. How stable will it be? There is little way of telling. Is it even for real? There has been little to no hype around it. Why? We are all so desperate to give Telkom the finger, one or two big advertising campaigns and they’d have more work than they can manage. Why then enter the market silently? It makes little sense. We’ll have to keep our eyes peeled to see how this one pans out.

ABSA’s wonky ADSL deal

Sep 21

ABSA is still offering connectivity to their clients. I remember in the past they had a free dial-up connectivity deal going (that was before broadband) and are still trying to add value to their services. Only problem is, there is NOTHING good about their offering! Why do it if offered as a value added service? I’m sure their aim is not making a lot of money from it. Its not their core business anyway!

Compare ABSA’s offering for 6 GB bandwidth @ R448.00 to Web Africa’s 10 GB bandwidth @ R490.00. For R42.00 more you get 4 GB more bandwidth if you go with Web Africa! I’d say ABSA is giving a raw deal… It would be interesting to know how many people fall for their deal just because they do not know of any better? Shape up or get lost ABSA!

Ubuntu Linux on Lenovo

Sep 10

Recently (on the 4th of September), Inside the box, a Lenovo blog, announced that they are planning to ship with a Linux Distro as the default OS installed on their system. In true Open Source fashion, they decided to run a poll so that people can vote for which Distro they would like to see shipping on a Lenovo. The results are astounding! At the moment Ubuntu is by far the distro of choice!

They have 5883 votes with Debian as a close second on 1089 results.

The poll results

You have to admit, Ubuntu being a South African produce, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when something like this happens!

Hop on over to Inside the box and cast your vote!
