I read this article today where it is said that the administrators of EliteTorrents have lost the battle against the MPAA. The guy got a 10 year sentence as he did not plead guilty and decided to fight. Now a jury decided he’s gotta go away for a while… Shame!
Two of his colleagues did plead guilty and both were given a fine of $3000 and a five month prison sentence. Heavy, but not as heavy as this:
“I had a meeting with my probation officer today and he told me that he has to install monitoring software onto my PC. No big deal to me; that is part of my sentence,” he wrote on his Lost and Alone blog. “However, their software doesn’t support GNU/Linux (which is what I use). So, he told me that if I want to use a computer, I would have to use an OS that the software can be installed on.” The monitoring software in question is only available for Microsoft Windows. Neither Linux nor a Macintosh running OS X would be an acceptable platform.
SHIT!!! That’s just plain cruel and inhumane punishment! That is more like a death sentence to a Linux user. Heavy… Don’t pirate software or you’ll be FORCED to use Windows. How much does THAT suck?!
Here is the full story.

It seems like it is official according to Techcrunch. Microsoft made a bid to buy Yahoo! for $44.6 billion. Quite a hefty amount of money if you ask me, but strangely I thought it should have been more. Strange.
Anyway, from a technical perspective, I wonder if all Yahoo!’s assets are going to have to “convert” to more Microsoft-centric technologies or if Microsoft is going to keep it as it is. In that case, I wonder how many of Yahoo!’s assets run on Linux. Even more so, I wonder if Microsoft is going to stop their “we’ll sue you for patent infringement” bullshit once and for all if that is the case. I reckon it would be quite interesting to know these things. Anyone got a bunch of links to some of the above mentioned information?
I’m almost dead sure Facebook does NOT run on IIS/Windows servers. I might be wrong, but I doubt it. If Facebook does in fact run on Linux, I have three words for Mark Zuckerberg: “Watch you back…”

This I find quite interesting. There is no doubt that the Digg effect is great for your traffic logs. Even if you hit the sub 100 diggs, your server is likely to take strain. What I find weird is that how little times people actually digg something!
If you look at this post of Lenovo running the Poll on which Linux to ship with, they have had far more votes on the poll that they have had diggs. In fact, the ratio is only 3.4%! Admittedly, we do not know how many traffic actually came from Digg and how many came from other sources. You would however think people who support such an initiative would vote on the poll and at the same time digg the article to get even more voters to support the cause.
I just find it amusing, thats all.

Recently (on the 4th of September), Inside the box, a Lenovo blog, announced that they are planning to ship with a Linux Distro as the default OS installed on their system. In true Open Source fashion, they decided to run a poll so that people can vote for which Distro they would like to see shipping on a Lenovo. The results are astounding! At the moment Ubuntu is by far the distro of choice!
They have 5883 votes with Debian as a close second on 1089 results.

You have to admit, Ubuntu being a South African produce, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when something like this happens!
Hop on over to Inside the box and cast your vote!

I’ve been longing for a change… Windows with all their hype(not!) on Vista was making me shudder. So I went to our first user group meeting last night and obtained Ubuntu from Charl (version 6.06, dapper).
Got back home plugged in a spare hard drive and installed Ubuntu. Man, I’ll tell you, its like riding a bicycle! I used to be a systems administrator for Linux servers back in the day of Redhat 7.1 & 8.0 and thought I’d be pretty much in the dark, but it all came back to me in a FLASH!
So I rolled my dual-boot installation. Was very quick!
I had issues connecting to secure sites (sites running on https://) on Firefox. I figured it was prolly a Firefox issue so I downloaded my FAVORITE Flock. Nope, same old story…
Then I remembered the Forums. Forums are your FRIEND. So I googled over to the Ubuntu forums and searched for an answer. Lo and behold, five minutes later and its sorted!
Problem is that ipv6 causes shit. So I had to disable it as follows:
Opened a terminal.
cd /etc/modprobe.d
sudo chmod 666 aliases (aliases is a read-only file so I had to change the permissions to edit the damn file)
vi aliases
Changed the line that reads:
alias net-pf-10 ipv6
to
alias net-pf-10 off ipv6
Rebooted the system.
To test if ipv6 is still running I typed the following command:
ip a | grep inet6
If the command returns a result ipv6 is still running. If not, problem solved!
Damn! It feels GOOOOD to be back! I must say, it looks a damn side different to what I was used to back in the days. The okes have been busy… Well done! Kudus to the Ubuntu guys!
