27dinner - A room full of greatness and good times…

The Jozi 27dinner was simply friggin’ amazing! Me and Feisty Bev got on the big bird and migrated north for one evening of great fun. Although badly powered by Eskom, it was a huge success! It was also the very first time the four Afriguys (credit: Nic) were together in one room all to announce the new beta release of Afrigator.

Afriguys

Mike, Justin, me and Mark. It was great seeing you all and specially meeting Mark for the first time! The Afrigator ride is probably one of the best.

It was simply awesome to have met all my online heroes finally. Vincent Maher, Nic Haralambous, Charl Norman, Simone Puterman, Eve D, Craig Nichols, Gregor Rohrig, Carly Ritz, Paul Jacobson, Tyler Reed, Armand du Plessis, Wezzo, Roger Saner, Carl Spies, Darren Gorton, to name but a few! You guys are all giants and a truly amazing bunch of individuals. It was a great privilege to share some of Stormhoek’s finest wine with all of you!

Funny thing was when Vincent was trying to poke out his mind’s eye after looking into some serious crack… Groogle did us all the favor to capture the moment and forever cementing it into our minds.

crack

Special thanx to Nic for picking up my dinner bill! I really appreciate it and next time its on me! Once again, thank you Stormhoek for the talk lube. Must say, I love this social networking, Web2.0 style, offline. I’ll be there again!

27dinner in the mutherciti - thank you everyone!

Another Disclaimer: Before some wet nappies start another “circle jerk” flame war, I’d like to state for the record that I DO NOT CARE what you think! I’ll jerk whatever I fancy. Call me a wanker for it and check the worry in my eye.

Me and my hun gathered all the courage we could muster and made the drive down to another awesome/fantastic 27dinner to spend a night with some of the greatest minds! It was fun, interesting and crammed with some of my all time heroes. It was held at the base of a very windy flat mountain @ the Deer Park Cafe.

I loved the awesome case study Dave presented in his welcoming speech using Bolton Deventer and his W-TEP as an analogy. As he said, thats why these real life meetings are so vital!

The Stormhoek Big-love was spreading at lightspeeds (ask Charl). Talks were short and to the point. There were nothing boring about it at all. Enjoy Phil’s talk about usability and found it quite interesting. It is something we overlook so very often, yet it is so important! I loved Randolf’s iPhone. I now want one more than ever!

I was so stoked to have met Fred from Ideate. The guy is a true legend. Clever, nice and funny oke. Next time I’d like to sit at his table and also Neil Blakey-Milner who is one of two of the greatest Python developers I’ve ever met. The other being Neville Newey who had his birthday on the 27th and although he was on the other side of the earth, he certainly was not forgotten! Happy birthday Nev!

Kerry-Anne Gilowey and Jo Duxbury from Freelance Central who play a MAJOR important role in the freelance scene in South Africa. Most of us freelancing geeks are fortunate to have long running, big contracts at the moment, but you never really know for sure how long it is going to last. Thats when they will start playing an enormous role in our lives. By the sound of it there is a couple of bright ideas in stall for the future which could prove incredibly useful for all freelancers, whether or not they are looking for work. I’d watch that spot. Oh and I really love the Cape Town Daily Photo Kerry-Anne and hubby Paul runs. Kerry-Anne suggested we start something like that for George, and we might just take you guys up on that offer.

The ever so brilliant Dave, the genius Max, the indomitable Rafiq and my new friend Elaine, I can never get tired of talking to you guys. I feel inspired, motivated and involved (Standard Bank, take notes…) after some brilliant conversations we had on the night and the day after. Special thanks to Dave and Elaine who entertained and looked after me the whole of Sunday. I appreciate it!

The great activist and most interesting fella Andre Bothma from SA Climate Crisis. Dude, we definitely need to get together rather soon! I commend the work you do and I think it is of great importance to support such an effort and try to leave our children with a legacy to be proud of.

Graham and Chris, the High Class Hoekers. It was fantastic seeing you folks once more. I loved Graham’s “Change the Power” talk and I think it is relevant to all of us. It is not easy to change the way the world thinks. I would treasure those pearls of wisdom. Oh and thank you very much for the wine! I really, REALLY appreciate it as much as every one else did! You guys are most kind.

To Jason and Gerry from Zoopy, it was great to finally meet you guys! You are already doing such a fantastic job, I cannot imagine how cool your upcoming release is going to make you! They are launching a new, phenomenal release in November, so guys, we cannot wait to see it! Thank you for doing the videos once again, chaps!

To Brandon Golding who took some classic pics all night long, thanks for stealing our souls and cement the moments in history. We often take that for granted, but not this time. This time we appreciate it for real man! You’ve done a fantastic job and you should never seize to do so.

To Jayx and Charl who also roadtripped, it was great fun having you there! We don’t get together at home but we sure as hell know how to do it 400 km away from home! It was all worth it.

It was a great pity that Uno, Stefano, Miguel and Yasser was not there. I was really looking forward partying with you guys, but maybe next time!

As the night progressed, so did the flow of the good stuff and if I left out anyone, please forgive me and feel free to remind me! I will make a point of adding you to this list. I know there were lots of cool people I talked very little to like Mike, other Phil, Glen and Bridgitte Verran and I would have loved to talk to more, but time was simply not on our side! Next time.

Update: I forgot Simon Botes from Fring! Sorry Simon! Maybe we could hook up as I see you reside in Plett? You should try and join our little geeky get togethers every now and again. We’d really love that!

I would just like to make a very special mention and a big thank you to my loving wife for making the effort to join me in my world! She started blogging and are making a concerted effort to play in our world and in return we now spend a lot more time together. I love you babe and I appreciate and love your efforts!

Join the next 27 or Geekdinner remotely!

Aug 01

Hmmm… only kidding, but why the hell not?! Why can we (those of us out in the sticks or who didn’t get a spot on the wiki) not join in on the great talks and share in the happiness and fun? Surely the venue can be picked to have a half decent adsl connection and whoever wants to join remotely can hook up with Skype and share the experience. As long as we can listen to what is said, it should be sufficient. I’d be more than happy with that. A video connection would be first choice, but I will not be that picky yet…

Even afterwards, if remote users are online, others attending the dinner can either connect using their laptops and chat to the remotes should they like to or the PC used to broadcast could be used to have a public conversation.

This is afterall geek gatherings, so why not go ubergeek with it and let anyone from anywhere join the fun. Same goes for people not getting a spot due to late registration on the wiki, could still participate in some way. I know the main thing about a dinner is the networking happening after the talks, but still, some of the talks is very interesting and should be shared!

I’m not entirely sure how practical something like this would be or what issues we’ll end up facing, but I think if we don’t try, we’ll never know!

So, Mike and Dave and all others, how about it? Can we give something like this a bash? If there is anyone with any good ideas on how to sufficiently set something like this up, speak-up man!

Garden Route Geekdinner - Thank You!!!!

Jun 29

I feel like CRAP! since it is almost a week later and I’m only gettting around to this now!

GeekDinner LogoI would just quickly like to thank each and everyone that attended the dinner. A special thanks goes to Bev for arranging everything and to Graham and Chris from Stormhoek for the great stories told and the even greater wine to get it going!

For all the Garden Route guys, if you want to buy some good ol’ Stormhoek, get in touch as I have a couple of bottles here! But be quick… otherwise I’ll be owing Stormhoek a great deal of money drinking the stuff myself!

I especially LOVE the Rose Pinotage. That is my new favorite, FAVORITE!

And to Duttons Cove, thank you for lending us your great venue and giving us superb food and service. We appreciate it!

Geekdinner: 23 June 2007

Jun 14

geeklogoWe had to postpone our geekery, but with good reason! Apart from only having some great wine to kick-start (limited amount of wine consumption for free!) the conversations on the night, we now have some great minds sharing great food for thought to get you thinking! Graham Knox, the mastermind behind Stormhoek will be telling us his more than interesting tale! Come and listen to how a small wine farm outside Wellington is turning the wine industry on its head!

I recently found this great post on Shaun Dewberry’s blog:

“…They expect a 2.8 percent growth in exports this year, assuming our currency depreciates by 10 percent…”

“…Take Stormhoek, our favourite hacker wine, who are blowing away these figures with a 500% increase in sales in less than two years...”

Interesting…

I will try and give some practical examples and uses of microformats that will (hopefully) make sense to everyone. That and how it will impact on web designers and bloggers and web site owners. Why they should not ignore the semantic web. How easy it is to implement and some more.

We are also doing our best to get the latest TED fellow to come and enlighten us about what is happening out in the world as far as great new technology goes. For those of you that do not know what TED is (it is NOT Father Ted Crilly! ;-) ) here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:

“…TED (Technology Entertainment Design) is an annual conference held in Monterey, California and recently, semi-annually in other cities around the world. TED describes itself as a “group of remarkable people that gather to exchange ideas of incalculable value”. Its lectures cover a broad set of topics including science, arts, politics, global issues, architecture, music and more. The speakers themselves are from a wide variety of communities and disciplines. The TED Conference also has acompanion conference, TED Global, held in varying locations…”

This year’s TED conference was held in Tanzania and Rafiq Phillips (Your Web AddiCT) was one of the phenominal people attending and representing SA!

Another great is the indomitable Hunter of Genius and SA Rocks! contributor. I can guarantee you that this would be one of the most inspiring talks you will hear. It will make you realise the Genius inside you and show you a fairly rare positive side to South Africa.

coveThe night will start fairly early and will go down at the beautiful Dutton’s Cove just outside George in Herolds Bay. Attending it is free, you only pay for what you consume. So if you want more info or would like to join us, you can either RSVP by putting your name on the wiki or you can simply drop me a e.mail by clicking right here, right now and I’ll do it for you! Or you can get in touch with any one of Charl, Bev or Jayx. Great food, great people and a great venue. What more can I say?

May 22

GeekdinnerYeah folks, its that time again. We’re planning another Stormhoek Garden Route Geekdinner! The venue this time would be Dutton’s Cove in Herolds Bay just outside of George. We’re sure there will be sufficient lift clubbing happening!

The Feisty Female must get a special mention for taking the arrangements off my hands. That being said, it is bound to be much better organized! (Lets face it, women kicks butt at that!!!) Thanks a bunch Bev!

To the Jozi guys, Kulula and 1time have flights @ reasonable rates. No excuses please!!!

Another AWESOME myXchange gathering!

Apr 26

Yup, it was a goody! We’ve had three new xchangers and we’ve sorted out a few niggling issues. Oh, and we had good topics of note once more.

myXchange LOGO

First off, thanks to the new okes for joining us!

Bev a.k.a FeistyFemale

Bev has connections of sorts with the Frogfooters and know frogfoot Joe! Another strange fact is she is practically my neighbor! She lives in the street behind me. An expert in Google AdWords. Can organize corporate gifts, state of the art gadgets branded and customized. She will be bringing us back from Cape Town some new software for our beloved Freedom Toaster! Thanks soooo much!

Mr Leroy Dixon (not yet blogging, but we’re working on him…)

Leroy is an interesting guy! He does catering and effects painting for a living. Effects painting? Yes, he was involved in the painting of Monte Casino. That kinda effects painting! He is also a Linux enthusiast of note! A true geek. A hobbyist… He tought us a thing or two about running Windblows apps under Linux! Also mentioned GimpShop which is an extension of Gimp to give it a Photoshop look and feel. Dunno much about it, but will check it out!

Louis from JDL Printing (Another non-blogger that needs some encouragement…)

He works with Jayx these days and has a printing shop. Louis was so kind as to give our beloved Freedom Toaster a new home. See, the toaster is kinda hidden away at present. As Bev mentioned: “… you needed to be a trained secret agent to know of its existence …” Now it is accessable once more at JDL Printing on the corner of Meade and Market Street in town! Louis, your a star!

One of the niggling issues was exactly that the Freedom Toaster needs a new home. Thats sorted. The next one is another upcoming Geek / 27-type Dinner. We were thinking Saturday the 2cnd of June. We’ll keep you posted about the when, where and what time, etc… We’d love to have the guys from Cape Town here again. If you guys can make it, please be in touch! Also, we would be elated to have some jozi jeeks here. Gator Mike and Gator Justin, it would be more than awesome if you could fit this in somewhere… I’ve asked Amatomu Vincent, but he’s got the pajama drill thing to do still and promised he’d visit us towards the end of the year.

So, thats it for now!

myXchange meeting

Apr 25

These past few weeks was hectic. So hectic that I clean forgot we have a myXchange meeting last week! So we moved it to this week since I was not the only one who forgot!

I love these coffee gobbling sessions we have and labelled “myXhange”. They are small, intimate and extremely interesting! We’ve got some serious bright minds attending them. From marketing gurus right through to programming legends. Most of us are Linux enthusiasts, although we seem to struggle to convince the non-conformist, Windows okes to come over to the dark side… MUHAHAHA.

Always interesting is new software and new web sites. And ofcourse news from our favorite web apps…

We also discovered a new Garden Route blogger that will start joining us from tonight! Thanks to Afrigator! Oh and welcome FeistyFemale! Happy to have you join us!

myXchange was a spin-off from the Geek Dinner we had here on the 9th of February. It was also born from the ashes of the Garden Route Open Source Software User Group. We’re a motley crew and we try to encompass all enthusiasts, not only technical or Linux enthusiast! The key, however, is enthusiastic…

I was chatting to Dave and we should look at having one of those Geeky/27y Dinners again! Soon, very, very soon…
