Ok, Flock wins!

I’m thinking it was the frustration of waiting for the new release or update of Flock that drove me to cheating. Got the new version 0.9 beta and all I can say is “WOWEEE”! It looks much sexier. It has got much more shortcuts to handy stuff. A bunch of new and funky features.

I especially love the improved new blogging interface!

To the dudes over at Flock (Thx Evan for reminding me!) you have done an outstanding job. A lot of old niggling bugs seems to be ironed out.

Now, the guys doing the Operator+ plug-in just need to look at why my favorite microformats plug-in is not working so funky anymore…

Oh, and another thing. I like the new look of the site! Very, very much…

I’m cheating on Flock…

Ok, I love Flock. Since I’m on a Mac, I’ve been cheating with Safari and Camino on my favorite browser, but with good reason!

When first I fired up the Mac, I thought, let me see what the fuss is about with Safari. I was less than impressed to say the least. Safari do not have any great built in features. It does not boast a big selection of add-ons and extensions. It looks fugly!!!

So I immediately downloaded and installed my favorite Flock after about 1 minute of Safari-ing around. As time progressed, so did my curiousity about Safari… So I gave it some more riding time. One thing that was evident to me, was the speed of the browser. It became more and more and more evident as I went along… Then after a good dose of Safari-ing, I was kind of AddiCTed to the speed! When I next fired up my favorite, I got kind of agitated at the second or two I had to wait for pages to load. Silly, I know!!

One thing that puzzles me is we’ve become more and more addicted to speed. Speed of the internet. Speed of communication. Response time to customers. We hardly use e.mail anymore (well, that IS debatable!) since we can actually talk to someone on an IM platform! Why, oh WHY do I have to wait longer for a page to open on such a great browser as Flock?! I’m really in two minds here…

As I Safari’d more and more, I thought I’d check out Camino. Rumors have it that it is even faster! WOW (no, not as in WOW, but as in Word Of Warning): I’m not at all convinced. Although Camino is Mozilla powered, I simply do not get the same sense of speed than I do from Safari… Admittedly, that made me think!

Why? My initial thoughts were: “Sure, Safari is fast. Maybe if Flock/Firefox did not have any extensions installed it would be just as fast!” Well, Camino is actually just that! A Flock/Firefox with no meat on its bones. Sadly I have to say, in a race it would come second!

All that being said, I still think Safari would slow down if it had to contend with external extensions parsing away at the DOM of the loading page. I still maintain that Flock is the greatest browser!

I guess the end would be a choice. Speed over features? I think not. Features rocks. What is a second or two to wait for loading time anyway. Feels like a lot… Oh well, there is always the good ol’ coin I can flip!

I’m now in a new home… Alive and kicking and can finally continue my “mindless drivel” as some astute blogger once mentioned!

Twittering Flock

Apr 10

Okay, I have to admit I was doing my damndest best not to get sucked into Twittering. Really I was. I failed when I saw this little kick-ass Flock/Firefox extenstion!

Introducing Twitterbar! Go here. Install the extenstion. Restart Flock. You are ready to Twit when you see this little icon in your address bar: (the little grey circle with the small white plus!)

flock-twitter1.png

When you hover over the little grey icon, it tells you how much characters you’ve got left.

flock-twitter2.png

So here is the low-down! Your browser’s address bar becomes your Twitter updater! Really, how much simpler can it get! What is really nifty is that when you are on a site and want to update twitter that you are checking out this site, you simply enter –post after the URL and it post it to twitter!

And here it is on twitter:

You can type your normal messages and do the same:

Kick-ass Tools, flock Stii

A mother of a microformats tool

Mar 28

For a while now I’ve been on about microformats and how useful they can be. What was lacking up to now is the TOOLS to make them useful! Here is a handy-dandy one. So Paul and Victoire, I guess you’ll be installing it soon? You can get it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/4106/
Operator

Introducing Operator! The mother of all tools. Operator is a Firefox/Flock extension that will recognize the following microformats on a page and enable you to do something worthwhile with them:

I’ll be going into more detail on each item later.

What it does:

It parses the web page you are on and if it finds any of the above microformats, it will highlight the relevant toolbar button and offer you something you can do with it.
For example:

If you have Technorati tags on your page, it will highlight the Flickr, del.icio.us and Technorati buttons. If you click on one of these buttons it will drop down with all the tag words it found. If you are in say the del.icio.us button and you click on one of the tag words, it will search del.icio.us for the selected tag word. Same for Flickr and Technorati.

operator1.png

Another GREAT feature is that if it find an hCalendar event, you can click the Google Calendar button and stick the event straight into your Google Calendar.

operator2.png

Or if it finds a hCard on the site, you can click the Export Contact button and it will save the contact in your Outlook Address book if you use Outlook! Nifty (as Mike would say!).

It is still early days for this extension, but it is sure to grow in popularity and extend as time goes by! So all we need to do is to start implementing damn microformats!

Using Flock - Bookmarking and Favorites

Dec 22

Following up on my previous tutorial (Using Flock - RSS subscriptions) I will explain in this one a definite WINNER in the Flock browser!

In flock, the clever developer guys integrated their bookmarks with http://del.icio.us

Now I know there is some awesome Firefox (and Flock) third party extensions, but the great thing about this built in del.icio.us integration is that it stores your bookmark both on del.icio.us and in your normal bookmarks! Great isn’t it?!

Word of warning: if you do not know what del.icio.us is yet, go here, here and here!
