Traffic stats and web advertising

I’ve seen quite a bit lately on web advertising. Mike wrote an interesting article “Traffic stats are dead”

I often wonder how effective is advertising on a site. If I look at myself, I cannot remember when last I clicked on a banner ad or on Google Adwords… So is it really effective?

On the stats issue, I use Awstats for my blog. This produces nice and pretty and quite informative stats, but my main use of it is to go look where did the traffic to my blog come from?

When we wrote the operations manual of our upcoming project, we discussed and determined that we want to educate people who attend networking meetings not to sell their products, but rather inform other people about their product benefits and uses. For example: I’m a security company that installs home security systems. Rather than going to a meeting telling people about this new X100S Anti-Breakin system, give them some free advice on how to secure their homes and what to watch out for before going on holiday, etc… Tell people about the uses and the benefits. Give them advice, tips and tricks.

In this light I see blogging as having HUGE potential as a marketing tool on the net. If you look at the tools on offer to promote and market your blog, like MyBlogLog, Muti, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc. then it makes perfect sense to use blogging as a marketing tool! V = B - P!

I do get it that it is time consuming. And I do get it that people do not have the technical expertise, but if they have the money to spend on online advertising, then maybe they should look at hiring the services of bloggers to promote their blog in the right channels.
