Is David Bullard so wrong?
Why is everyone so up in arms? As long as he justifies his views, he’ll keep on writing. So what is the issue here? Clearly he is not talking about you. He is simply talking about all the reality bloggers (people blogging about their “meaningless” lives) and spammers. Read the article here.
The only mistake he made was to generalise and stereo type ALL bloggers. Come on! If all you bloggers were gunslingers, 27 dinners/Geek Dinners would be like a showdown at the OK Corral! Surely he is not saying that you’re all gunslingers. (Note to Charl: at
the next myXchange meeting, we’re banning all forms of weapons. We do
not need a bloodbath. Just to be safe…) That would be absurd!
Afterall, he is a credible journalists! Surely he is not saying that if he does not understand what you are blogging about (Python code or microformats, etc…) you are producing “meaningless drivel”! That would be absurd! No, use your brain! He was just stereo typing all bloggers. Thats all.
As far as me wanting his job, why the hell would I? I’m not a journalist! I never, EVER claimed to be one! No, David, you’re stereo typing again. I’ve got no interest in becoming a journo. Never have! I do however think there is a lot of your collegues that are way better journalists than what you can ever be, but thats just my personal view. I’m just stereo typing you a bit as a bad, misinformed journalist. Sorry!
What does astound me is this statement:
“I have no objection to reading my Sunday Times on
the Internet because I know the content has been through the same
process as the print edition.”
Hmmm… I always thought they only published facts and not assumptions.
Naturally, the blogosphere retaliated:

One of my biggest concerns is that David Bullard is a gatekeeper to the audience of the traditional media. His tarring of us all with the same brush does a hell of a lot of damage to the mindsets of our potential audience.
Sure, he worked himself into that position and he may or may not deserv it, but that doesn’t justify abusing the power he has.
If page 3 of the S.T. can be entirely dedicated to Paris Hilton, without the use of one swear-word, shouldn’t someone tell him that he can find far better and honest opinions on blogs… but then, I didn’t read the article - I prefer to read about real issues.
Maybe Nomfundo Xulu (Business missing out on blogging) should start looking forward to a nice little corner spot on the head-page of the Business Times section… as is said, if you can’t take the heat in the kitchen, get out!
Yeah no we’re banning all weapons for sure! We should put up a big sign “Please leave your AK as well as all your various stabbing knives at the door, thanks!”

[...] Give thanks that you woke up in South Africa today, and blog for all you’re worth. Rock your bullhorn boys & girls. Who knows, you may even refine your skills and one day rise to the hallowed domain of the pressroom, I know you all secretly long for it, now dontcha?! [...]
Stii, I hate to say it but I think you (and loads of others) fell for this one hook, line and sinker.
David put up an excellent publicity stunt, intentionally being fuelled by his supposed “rivals”
Imel, I’m cool with that. Got sufficient exposure in return for joining the cacophony (compliments of Matthew Buckland!).
Just a quick note though. Gregor says :
“Your gut feeling is very wrong Eric, but a great idea if Bullard would have past his column to us first. As you can notice, the Bullard blog runs on wordpress.com platform, surely not a platform we would have chosen if this was planned, since we’re not benefiting from the hits.
I get the feeling that the idea that this was planned acts as a great comfort for all those reacting to emotionally and now seeing Bullard in his element.”
So if you are thinking this was a ploy to launch a blog, I hate to say it, but you are wrong…
